KERELA FLOODS: A NATIONAL DISASTER

KERALA FLOODS:               A NATIONAL DISASTER
\

I think all of us are aware of the problem that Kerala is facing right now. Being a human it is so depressing for me to read all these news articles published reflecting the stats of no. of deaths and people suffering and all that. When I came to know all this I started searching the reasons of this natural calamity and I came to know that there are a lot of reasons behind this disaster. These flood alerts has been made in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka as well.
See why do floods happen is something very subjective and I think we all have read about these things in our primary classes so what now. I will be discussing the factors that lead to Kerala flood disaster according to my study:
    1)  Increasing Rainfall –   Kerala faces flood issues every year but this time the rainfall has increased by 37.5% (approx.) and in regions like Idukki it has increased by 83%. Hence, this led to flood
    2)   Less Rainbreaks- let me explain this term. Rainbreaks are the breaks or the unusual gaps between the rainfalls which used to be 4 days but this time it was 2-3 days which lead to accumulating water
    3)  Underprepared condition- I read this in news that the state is an exception since it does not have a single battalion of the state disaster response force (SDRF), which is mandatory as per the rules to tackle the natural calamities. A review by disaster authorities under MHA found fault with the state for not gradually releasing water from about 30 dams in anticipation of the rains.
    4)  Lacking flood control mechanisms-   See I know a lot of you might say that all the flood prevention mechanisms cost a lot but then I think this should be the primary concern of the government to serve the humankind instead of focussing on the technological growth. All of us are behind making India the new technologically advanced country but the use of that technology should be made in controlling these sort of issues I think.

These are the problems and we have ranted about it. What next? What is the plan of action? I don’t know why were we taught about disaster management in 8th class when we are actually not doing anything of that sort. Sorry if im sounding rude but to be honest this is the harsh reality and a lot of innocent people are suffering.

Problems the victims are facing:
1)They can’t use washrooms which is I guess one of the basic necessities of our lives.
       2) They don’t have food.
       3) The crops and properties are damaged leading to economic loss.

I don’t know the technicalities of these methods of flood control but I have read about them and hence I think it is vital to address them:

1) Dike- it is a barrier that is used to hold back water. It is a large slab of rock that cuts another type of rock.

2) Weir- it is a low head dam that is also a barrier across the horizontal width of a river to reduce the water level.

3) Reservoirs in parking garages and making playing ground areas for storing water during heavy rains- it is used in Netherlands.

I pray to god to improve the condition of Kerala.

And all of us can contribute to help the victims. The link to all of the donation is below please help even a rupee is appreciated.

Do help guys!

CRYING IS IMPORTANT

Many people perceive crying as weakness. In fact we Indians say that boys don’t cry and if you are a boy and you are seen crying then your character is questioned and you are judged for lifetime. Apparently, this is a big mistake because confronting your emotions gives a lot of strength even though it’s a type of vulnerability. If you feel like crying then don’t hold back because:        1) Crying cleanses your eyes- tears lubricate your eyeball and eyelid which helps to see well.        2) Crying fights cold- tears helps to fight disease causing pathogens.          3) Emotional tears eliminates toxins These are some scientific reasons stating the importance of shedding tears. But what I think is that crying is amazing. I think we underestimate the power of producing tears.              We are told that emotionally strong people d...

HOW TO ENJOY YOUR OWN COMPANY?

HOW TO ENJOY YOUR OWN COMPANY? This is something that I wanted to write for the longest time. So, how to enjoy your own company? Follow the following steps:-    1)   Get rid of misconceptions -   When first you will try to hang all by yourself only doubts you will have in your mind will be things that we were always told ever since our childhood like who goes for watching a movie alone? Or who goes to eat alone? You are considered weird or mad when you do things alone because the socially believed protocol is to be with friends or family. It is something that everyone prefers but it is not something that should be done. These all are just misconceptions that you always need someone to accompany you or to be a partner in crime. I think this happens almost with most of us because we are so used to be with someone that we think that we always need someone to make you happy. It is a massive misconception that you always need someone to be with yo...

Body Shaming! WHY?

BODY SHAMING! WHY?   Firstly what is body shaming. Let me define it briefly for those who don’t know what body shaming really is. Body shaming is make fun of anyone’s appearance or humiliating anyone based on their physicality. Why is it practised? I have an answer to this question. We do body shaming just for fun. Ever since our childhood we give our friends or classmates a title corresponding to their colour or shape. Body shammers think it is entertainment but sorry it isn’t. I have been a victim of being body shammed a lot of times just for having a dark complexion and you know what I used to do I used to feel so bad thinking about why that person called me so and I used to wish to get a fairer skin but now tables have turned   I am proud of my complexion. See we can’t choose our body, if everyone had an opportunity to choose then obviously all of us would have chosen a fairer and muscular sort of a body but now I understood that “It does not matt...
