KERALA FLOODS: A NATIONAL DISASTER
\
I think all of us are aware of the problem that Kerala is
facing right now. Being a human it is so depressing for me to read all these
news articles published reflecting the stats of no. of deaths and people suffering
and all that. When I came to know all this I started searching the reasons of
this natural calamity and I came to know that there are a lot of reasons behind
this disaster. These flood alerts has been made in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka as
well.
See why do floods happen is something very subjective and I
think we all have read about these things in our primary classes so what now. I
will be discussing the factors that lead to Kerala flood disaster according to
my study:
1) Increasing Rainfall – Kerala
faces flood issues every year but this time the rainfall has increased by 37.5%
(approx.) and in regions like Idukki it has increased by 83%. Hence, this led
to flood
2) Less Rainbreaks- let me explain this term. Rainbreaks are the breaks or the unusual gaps between the rainfalls which used to be 4 days
but this time it was 2-3 days which lead to accumulating water
3) Underprepared condition- I read this in news
that the state is an exception since it does not have a single battalion of the
state disaster response force (SDRF), which is mandatory as per the rules to
tackle the natural calamities. A review by disaster authorities under MHA found
fault with the state for not gradually releasing water from about 30 dams in
anticipation of the rains.
4) Lacking flood control mechanisms- See I
know a lot of you might say that all the flood prevention mechanisms cost a lot
but then I think this should be the primary concern of the government to serve
the humankind instead of focussing on the technological growth. All of us are
behind making India the new technologically advanced country but the use of
that technology should be made in controlling these sort of issues I think.
These are the problems and we
have ranted about it. What next? What is the plan of action? I don’t know why
were we taught about disaster management in 8th class when we are
actually not doing anything of that sort. Sorry if im sounding rude but to be
honest this is the harsh reality and a lot of innocent people are suffering.
Problems the victims are facing:
1)They can’t use washrooms which is I guess one of
the basic necessities of our lives.
2) They don’t have food.
3) The crops and properties are damaged leading to economic
loss.
I don’t know the technicalities of these
methods of flood control but I have read about them and hence I think it is
vital to address them:
1) Dike- it is a barrier that is used to
hold back water. It is a large slab of rock that cuts another type of rock.
2) Weir- it is a low head dam that is also
a barrier across the horizontal width of a river to reduce the water level.
3) Reservoirs in parking garages and making playing ground areas for storing water during heavy rains- it is
used in Netherlands.
I pray to god to improve the condition of Kerala.
And all of us can contribute to help the
victims. The link to all of the donation is below please help even a rupee is
appreciated.
Do
help guys!
